The US is the richest country in the world and Cuba is pretty poor. It also gets attacked routinely by operatives in the US. They’ve had their airlines bombed, crops sprayed with chemical agents, children infected with biological toxins. There’s been 50 years of terrorism imposed on them from the world’s richest country. That’s a lot of hardship. Also keep in mind that whenever you attack a nation that nation gets a lot more repressive. They clamp down on freedom of expression because they fear it is an effort to undermine them. Castro is repressive. The US is getting more repressive in the wake of 9-11, but we haven’t been attacked anywhere near what Cuba has been attacked. So Cubans definitely suffer a lot. What’s amazing to me is how well they’ve performed given all the violence and war that they must endure.
